Supporting Local Agencies During the COVID-19 Pandemic

One of the ways that the Rotary Club of Parker is helping out during the current pandemic is to provide financial support to several local agencies that are providing care.  We have contributed $18,000 in the past two months (March - May); this includes a $1500 matching grant from Rotary District 5450.

Here is where the money has gone:

  • Parker Adventist Hospital - Food:  $1,000.00

  • Parker Adventist Hospital - Emergency Preparedness:  $2,000.00

  • Parker Senior Center:  $1,000.00

  • Aging Resources of Douglas County:  $2,000.00

  • Crisis Center: $2,000.00

  • Parker Task Force:  $6,000.00 (includes $1,500 from District Matching Grant)

  • SECORCares:  $3,000.00

Rotarian Mike Endres was able to present checks to two local organizations while he was volunteering at SECORCares.   First, Mike hooked up with Kevin Fox and Lori Gloer of Aging Resources of Douglas County.  Shown below are Mike (right) with Kevin Fox.  Click here for more information on the services offered by Aging Resources of Douglas County.  (Note: These photos were taken before the recommendation to wear masks came into effect.)

Mike also presented a check to Dennis Gorton, Executive Director of SECORCares.  Depending upon the day, SECORCares has been experiencing 3-4 times the normal volume of guests using the food bank and could benefit from additional volunteers.  Most volunteer shifts are two hours if you’d like to get out of the house to help provide some essential services.  Information is available on the SECORCares website.

The Meetings Go On!

Thank you all for participating in our Parker Rotary Club meetings every Thursday morning at 7:00 a.m. via Zoom during this COVID-19 pandemic. This has been an effective alternative since we are not able to meet in person.  Our attendance continues to grow each week as we conduct our business, have great programs and share some social time.....all in less than one hour!

We have enjoyed presentations from

  • April 2: Principal Tim Ottman, Ponderosa High School

  • April 16: Bob Baker, Fire Chief, South Metro Fire Rescue

  • April 23: Kara Massa, Executive Director, Parker Chamber of Commerce

  • April 30: Barbara Becker, Director of Mental Health First Aid Colorado

  • May 6: Madeline Miller, genetic counselor for Centura Health

If you are currently a member of the Rotary Club of Parker, you will receive an email each week with the link to participate in that week’s online meeting.  If you are not currently a member but would like to participate in the online meetings, please send an email to President Gail Lehrmann at glehrmann@aol.com to have your name added to the email list.

The Fight against Polio 2020

This year we are unable to collect funds as we have done in the past, but the need is as great as ever especially considering the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.  Historically our club has been one of the top-contributing clubs in District, reflecting our belief  in the importance of Rotary's battle to eradicate this terrible disease.  It would be appreciated if each member of the Parker Rotary Club would give whatever they can.  No gift is too small.

Please make your checks out to Parker Rotary Club Foundation and mail it to

P O Box 1472

Parker, CO 80134.

Please designate on the memo line "Polio eradication."

In order for your contribution to be included in this Rotary year, please mail your check before June 1.

Pizza and Snacks for Front-Line Workers

One of the fun ways we have helped during the coronavirus pandemic is to provide pizza and snacks for front-line workers in Parker.  During the weeks of May 4 and 11, we provided pizza and snacks at the following locations:

  • All six Parker-area fire stations as a thank you/appreciation for their service to the community during this challenging time.  The firefighters at Station 41 are hamming it up above to say Thank you!

  • Parker Police Department, who gave us a shout-out on their Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/ParkerPoliceDepartment

  • The volunteers at two local food banks: SECORCares and the Parker Task Force

  • Douglas County Sheriff’s Office

  • Staff at local nursing homes and long-term care facilities

  • Parker Senior Center

Click here for a photo album of the pizza/snack support.

More Masks!

The project to make masks goes on!  As of May 4, we have distributed 250 masks to

  • four nursing homes/senior residential homes

  • volunteers at two Parker food banks: SECORCares and the Parker Task Force

  • volunteers at the Parker Senior Center.

The photo shows a sample of the fun masks that Rotarians and friends have stitched -- everything from pigs to poppies!

Thank you to all who have donated fabric, cut out fabric, and stitched masks together.

Update from Former Officers of Rocky Vista University RCC – Graduating from Medical School!

Hi Rotarians!

I hope things are going well for you down there in Colorado. I just wanted to send an update to our friends at the Parker Rotary Club about how Richard is doing and where Amelia, Molly, and I are headed next following our graduation from medical school last Friday!

  • Richard Rodriguez-Brizuela is in Utah and will finish his fourth year of medical school after his year-long anatomy fellowship at RVUCOM. He plans to apply to neurology residencies in the fall.

  • Molly McLellan is headed for Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, CO to begin a family medicine residency.

  • Amelia Sneve sent the following message:

    • "Hi Rotary Club,
I hope all is well! I wanted to thank you all for including our RCC chapter in your meetings and your volunteer opportunities. It was by far one of the most fun and rewarding parts of medical school. I really enjoyed reading to the 3rd grade class as part of the Anti-Bullying program, and that helped me find my medical specialty - pediatrics! I am looking forward to continuing my work with kids during my pediatrics residency [at the University of Nebraska] in Omaha, NE. I wish you all the best!"

  • Mia - I am moving soon to Lexington, KY to begin an internal medicine residency at the University of Kentucky.

We are excited to begin the next phase of our training as brand-new doctors!

I hope Rotary has been able to meet virtually to somehow carry out the mission during this strange new time in world history. We all remember our time as officers of RCC/RVU very fondly. Special greetings to Jane and Kam!

All the very best,

Mia Nevala, DO

Keep in Touch – Update Zoom
On April 27, Zoom released Zoom 5.0, setting a new standard in video communications security.  With this upgrade, Zoom provides increased protection for meeting data and resistance against tampering.  After May 30, all Zoom clients on older versions will be required to upgrade before joining meetings so the new encryption will be fully enabled for all Zoom meetings.  Please update your Zoom app by visiting https://zoom.com/download so you can continue to take part in our Rotary meetings.

Thank you!
